dear Colleagues,
Since the award’s inception in 1986, the Berlin International Film Festival has been honouring individuals and institutions from the world of film that the festival feels particularly connected to with the Berlinale Camera, as a token of gratitude for their contributions to cinema.
We invite you to report on the awarding of the Berlinale Camera to director and actor Jiří Menzel in the presence of Berlinale Director Dieter Kosslick on Friday, February 23, at Kino International. Unfortunately, due to health reasons Jiří Menzel will be unable to attend the award ceremony personally. His acting colleague in The Interpreter Peter Simonischek will be accepting the Berlinale Camera on his behalf and delivering the award to him in Prague.

About Jiří Menzel
Jiří Menzel is considered a master of comedy and a central protagonist of the Czech New Wave. The Academy Award recipient was not permitted to practice his art in the CSSR for long periods of time in reprisal for the biting satire of his early films. His film Larks on a String, which was banned in 1969 after the brutal suppression of the Prague Spring, celebrated its world premiere 21 years later at the Berlinale, where it was honoured with the Golden Bear.
Jiří Menzel was already busy producing diverse short films during his studies at the Prague film academy FAMU. After graduation, he took on smaller acting roles and served as a director’s assistant, before realising his debut feature, Closely Watched Trains, in 1966 – the film went on to receive the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1968. After the banning of Larks on a String, Menzel was primarily employed in theatres in the CSSR and abroad, as well as working for Swedish television. In the mid 1970s he returned to directing films. In the 1990s, Menzel was again primarily active as a director at various theatres in Prague and on stages across Europe, including the Comédie Française.
Modelled on a real film camera, the Berlinale Camera trophy features 128 finely crafted individual components. The unique award is a product of the artistry of Düsseldorf-based goldsmith Georg Hornemann.

Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren,
liebe Kolleginnen und Kollegen,
mit der Berlinale Kamera zeichnen die Internationalen Filmfestspiele Berlin seit 1986 Filmpersönlichkeiten oder Institutionen aus, denen sie sich besonders verbunden fühlen und denen sie mit dieser Ehrung ihren Dank ausdrücken möchten.
Wir laden Sie ein zur Berichterstattung über die Verleihung der Berlinale Kamera an den Regisseur und Schauspieler Jiří Menzel in Anwesenheit von Berlinale Direktor Dieter Kosslick am Freitag, 23. Februar im Kino International. Leider wird Jiří Menzel aus gesundheitlichen Gründen der Verleihung nicht persönlich beiwohnen können. Die Berlinale Kamera wird sein Schauspielkollege aus The Interpreter Peter Simonischek stellvertretend entgegennehmen, um ihm den Preis nach Prag zu überbringen.

Über Jiří Menzel
Jiří Menzel gilt als Meister der Komödie und hat die tschechische Nouvelle Vague entscheidend geprägt. Aufgrund seiner satirischen Filme erhielt der Oscar-Preisträger lange Zeit Berufsverbot in der ČSSR. Sein Film Lerchen am Faden, der 1969 nach der Niederschlagung des Prager Frühlings verboten wurde, feierte erst 21 Jahre später bei der Berlinale Weltpremiere und wurde mit dem Goldenen Bären ausgezeichnet.
Bereits während seines Studiums an der Prager Filmhochschule FAMU drehte Jiří Menzel diverse Kurzfilme. Nach seinem Abschluss übernahm er kleinere Schauspielrollen und Regieassistenzen, bevor er mit Liebe nach Fahrplan 1966 seinen ersten Spielfilm realisierte, der 1968 den Oscar für den Besten Fremdsprachigen Film gewann. Nach dem Verbot von Lerchen am Faden arbeitete er vor allem an Theatern in der ČSSR und im Ausland sowie für das Fernsehen in Schweden. Mitte der 70er Jahre kehrte er zur Filmregie zurück. In den 1990er Jahren war er als Regisseur vor allem an Prager Theatern und europäischen Bühnen, u.a. der Comédie-Française, tätig.
Die Berlinale Kamera besteht aus 128 Einzelteilen und ist einer realen Filmkamera nachempfunden. Hergestellt wird sie von dem Düsseldorfer Goldschmiedekünstler Georg Hornemann.
