Pandeli Glavanis 

غادرنا الراحل د. بندلي جلافانس، الأكاديمي الشيوعي المتميز أكاديميا وفكريا، وخاصة بقائه على قناعاته الفكرية بعد تفكك الاتحاد السوفييتي.
تعرفت إليه في رام الله أثناء زياراته المتكررة والطويلة للأرض المحتلة أثناء زواجه هو وكاثي جلافانس قبل أن يفترقا لاحقاً.
بندلي رجل دمث وخجول وخدوم وكريم وعالم وغير مدعي. وهو يوناني الأصل مصري النشأة. على أن أهم ما اذكره عن بندلي أنه كان في خدمة الفلسطينيين دائما من موقعه الأكاديمي وخاصة حينما كان محاضراً في جامعة دُرهم شمال بريطانيا ولاحقا في جامعة مانشستر حيث زرناه عناية زوجتي وأنا عام 1995 وقدمت ورقة في مؤتمر عن التنمية هناك.

هناك العديد من الفلسطينيين من الضفة والقطاع ومن اليسار تحديداً الذين سهَّل لهم بندلي فرصة إكمال دراسة الماجستير في جامعتي درهم ومانشستر حين كان يحاضر في كلتيهما. كان يسمح لطلبته بأن يتواجدوا بالحد الأدنى الزمني في محيط الجامعة التي يدرسون فيها في بريطانيا طبقا للقانون الجامعي ووجوب وجود طالب الدراسات العليا في محيط الجامعة بمسافة لا تزيد عن بضع عشرات الكيلومترات. وهذا ما وفر عليهم تكاليفا عالية.

للأسف بعض هؤلاء الطلبة كانوا ناكري الجميل لبندلي إلى حد تورطهم  في مناكفات لصالح محاضرين ضد بندلي ضمن هذه الدائرة أو تلك رغم أنه كان السبب حتى في مجرد قبولهم، وكنت انا من رشح البعض منهم له كي يقبل الإشراف عليه.

يمكنني الزعم بأن بندلي كان من مؤيدي القضية الفلسطينية بلا تردد، وهو وإن كان يوناني الأصل، إلا أنه عربي الهوى من مدخل تقدمي بل شيوعي. وقد عمل في كثير من الجامعات وخاصة الجامعة الأمريكية في القاهرة.

كان بندلي علمياً ممن بحثوا في التنمية من مدخل انماط الإنتاج وتمفصل أنماط الإنتاج Articulation of Modes of Production  وخاصة ما يتعلق بالتطور الريفي في الشرق الأوسط حيث  وضع هو وكاثي  كتاب مرجعيا بعنوان

كان دائم المشاركة في حلقة من مجموعة أكاديميين في بريطانيا يلتقون كل ثلاثة اشهر من جامعات لندن وأكسفورد ومانشتر وإكزتر لمناقشة أوراق عن الشرق الأوسط.

وقد تركزت أبحاثه في التنمية في الوطن العربي،

Pandeli Glavanis studied at Princeton University (BA & MA) and Hull University (PhD). After beginning his teaching career at AUC in the Department of Economics & Political Science in 1974, he lectured at the University of Hull (1976-1978), University of Durham (1978-1994), the University of Manchester (1994-2000), and the University of Newcastle (2000-2003), and served as a full time World Bank Senior Policy Adviser on Public Sector Reform Projects in Yemen (2003-2004). Professor Glavanis returned to AUC in 2004 as Associate Director of the Center for Learning and Teaching (CLT). Professor Glavanis particularly focused on training AUC faculty to improve their teaching methodologies and strategies, including incorporating multimedia content production by students. As the Director of the Academic Community Engagement (ACE) Program since 2014, he was a highly visible and effective advocate of community-based learning, outreach and community engagement at AUC. Among his numerous contributions, Professor Glavanis served as Chair of the University Senate (2013-2015). He is the recipient of two Merit Awards of Excellence, one for Administrative Service (2014), and the second for Teaching (2015), in addition to receiving the President’s Catalyst Award for Change: Citizenship and Service (2013) and an award for contributions to the Senate (2012).
