Sustainable development and environmental conservation and more

Lots of relevant links to choose from below. But first I want to
update you on progress since I returned to Palestine. We have six new
major projects now that are funded (total >$600,000 in restricted
funds) relating to environmental research, education, and conservation
(one of them from National Geographic). Considering the scope of the
work, the money is minimal and we still depend much on unrestricted
donations and volunteer efforts (including our own, I am a volunteer
and so is my wife and many others). However, our results relative to
the support are phenomenally good. Many projects in the past two years
had great outcomes helping people and nature. We have learned to
become even more efficient/productive and will continue to improve.
Here is a simple example of the last project we completed successfully
with a $4000 fund from Belgian Development Cooperation (DGD) in
partnership with the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences
(RBINS) through its CEBioS (Capacities for Biodiversity and
Sustainable Development) program supplemented by Palestine Museum of
Natural History (palestinenature.org) internal funding and volunteer
effort:
Socio-economic sustainable development and environmental conservation
at the northern transition zone to Wadi Qana Protected Area,
Palestine: This project focused on a) the study the ecosystems in the
northern transition zone of Wadi Qana Protected area including on
looking for temporary rainfall ponds and studying the only currently
known location of the Syrian spadefoot toad, b) develop management
plan and recommendations that foster environmental education and
conservation for an endangered pond ecosystem. We report on the pond’s
changes through the seasons and studied flora and fauna including the
locally endangered Syrian Spade-footed Toad. We managed to raise the
tadpoles ex-situ and return them successfully. The Pond Water-crowfoot
(Ranunculus peltatus) starts to grow soon in the late January and
early February then declines and the pond gets duckweed (Lemna minor)
staying a bit longer. We did a SWOT analysis for this pond focusing on
conservation. Strengths include its uniqueness and local interest;
weaknesses include previous neglect; threats include Israeli coonial
activities and Palestinian human activities; opportunities are high in
research potential, ecotourism, and simple remedial measures that will
protect the site while benefitting the local people. Remedial measures
were put in place with help of cooperative local communities.
